Ever since their ad came out, Apple has REALLY been pushing this video! It's been working -- the 'Such Great Heights' video is still most downloaded music video, for the 4th consecutive day. Also of interest, There are only 11 music videos in the top 50 video downloads; most of the videos being downloaded continue to be TV shows. Good thing it's called the "iTunes Music Store!" c;

  2006 01-19  The Postal Service states 'We ... are extremely disappointed...'

Ben Gibbard of The Postal Service has posted a statement on the band's website:

A Note from Ben

It has recently come to our attention that Apple Computers' new television commercial for the Intel chip features a shot-for-shot recreation of our video for 'Such Great Heights' made by the same filmmakers responsible for the original. We did not approve this commercialization and are extremely disappointed with both parties that this was executed without our consultation or consent. -Ben Gibbard, The Postal Service

  2006 01-19  Why did Apple censor the iTunes version of the "Such Great Heights" video?

TylerHowarth noticed the iTunes version of the video has some parts blurred out which had been visible in previously released versions of the video.

I put together some side-by side images of these two videos to compare; two examples are posted below; several more are posted here.

The video was most likely edited for one of two reasons: Apple blurred the brand name specifically because of its reference to a competing (with Intel) chip manufacturer; or like MTV, Apple cannot show the 'brand' name without permission (ironic, isn't it?) and had to edit it out now that the music video has graduated from a small Indie video, to a commercial (no pun intended) music video.

  2006 01-17  TPS Record company states: same directors, but we were unaware...

Via Wired's The Cult of Mac Blog:

Sarah Moody of Sub Pop Records, The Postal Service's Seattle record company, writes:

"... the Apple commercial is indeed very similar, it wasn't licensed in any form, and was made by the same directors as the Postal Service video. We weren't alerted to the fact that it existed until the day it came out."

Both the Apple ad and the music video were directed by Josh Melnick and Xander Charity, whose working name is Josh & Xander.

As first reported by Wired's The Cult of Mac Blog, Apple's new Intel/iMac ad looks very similar to the "Such Great Heights" music video by The Postal Service, starting off the chain of events to follow. It also reminds some of the previous controversy over Apple's Eminem/iPod ad which some thought too closely resembled a Lugz ad. Macworld carried that story.

  2006 01-10  Apple releases new Intel/iMac ad & some people think, "That looks familiar."

At Macworld Expo 2006, Apple introduces their first Mac computers based on Intel processors. They also show their new ad, which offers the notion that Intel's chips are being "set free" from their history of being "trapped inside PCs--dull little boxes, dutifully performing dull little tasks." Intel, having not known the ad existed until they saw it at Macworld, were just a little bit unhappy with their new partner. Apple has since broadcast the ad on TV and also started an internet campaign based on the ad, with print sure to follow.
